Ready to see some glaciers and whales and wondering what to wear on an Alaskan cruise? I've been on multiple Alaska cruises and have expert knowledge of what you should pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few questions you need to consider: What will the weather be like? How can I pack in a way that means I won\u2019t be bringing my entire wardrobe along? What will I be doing while I\u2019m there that will require a particular outfit? What sorts of fabrics are best in Alaska?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of what you pack will depend on two things: the weather\/time of year and your chosen activities. Since the Alaska cruise season is typically from late April through September, the weather options narrow considerably. I've been on plenty of these popular west coast cruises and here's my advice for what to wear on an Alaska Cruise...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Weather for What to Wear on an Alaskan Cruise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Winter months are typically November, December, January, and February. Most tourists tend to avoid these months as the temperatures in the middle part of the state (the southern areas) don\u2019t tend to rise above freezing and in the north, they don\u2019t get above zero!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major towns get around 70 inches of snow on average per year. Some areas can receive up to 500 inches! Needless to say, cruises don\u2019t tend to run during the four coldest months of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring comes around in late March and runs through May. The average high will be around 35-55 degrees Fahrenheit, so not very warm, yet. Most cruises don\u2019t start up until April, so the weather is at least on the warmer end of spring, typically highs nearing 55F in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring brings rain in Alaska, though. So, the first thing to pack will be items that are made of moisture-wicking material, so it dries quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once summer hits, the weather is mild and the days are long. The average temperature during June, July, and August will be between 50-65 degrees Fahrenheit, with some days in certain areas hitting as high as 80 degrees. Summer Alaska cruises are one of the most popular times and this warmer weather also comes with big price tags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another benefit of summer cruising is the daylight hours. In areas like Anchorage, sunlight lasts from 4:30 am until 11:30 pm. But for much of the summer, it doesn\u2019t ever get totally dark from sunset to sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fall runs through September and October and brings back the rain. In the less intense regions, the average will be between 35-45 degrees, but the interior areas will start feeling much more wintery by the end of October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like much of the lower 48, the seasons in Alaska change and are distinct. Depending on the season you plan to travel during, your packing options may change some, but ultimately it\u2019s about layers and moisture-wicking materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What's necessary for packing for Alaska weather?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When packing for Alaska weather, it's important to be prepared for a wide range of temperatures and conditions. Bring layers of clothing in light, medium, and heavy weights to accommodate potential changes in the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pack waterproof items such as a raincoat or poncho and waterproof hiking boots to stay dry during rainy days. Include hats, gloves, and scarves for added warmth, especially during summer evenings. Sunscreen is also recommended year-round due to the strong sun exposure even in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waterproof Rain Jacket<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Layers are your best bet for Alaska. No matter which area of Alaska you are in, a waterproof jacket will serve you well. Lightweight and helpful with keeping you dry, a waterproof jacket can be stuffed into a bag easily if you don\u2019t need it. Whatever style you get, be sure it has a hood!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nice thing about waterproof jackets is they're often great for layering over a fleece jacket for added warmth. So consider sizing carefully, you may want a looser-fitting jacket if you plan to layer it over something thicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
