Sitting down\u00a0with a physical map and planning out your cross-country road trip can be time-consuming and difficult. I'm sure baby boomers and Gen X'ers will remember the days of AAA TripTiks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fortunately, it's easy to plan a road trip with Google Maps or to use it to help you plan an itinerary for a city trip you're planning. You just need to create your own Custom Google Map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. Create a New Google Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe first step is to open Google Maps, click on the \"hamburger menu\" (three lines in the top corner), then click on the \u201cMy Places\u201d tab. Your custom maps will be shown here, to create a new map, select \u201cCreate Map.\u201d Another shortcut is to simply go to mymaps.google.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nName your map something easy that describes your trip. Google Maps does make these maps able to be shared with the public, or with friends. So keep that in mind when you're naming your map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You'll also see you start with one layer, called Untitled Layer. You can adjust that name. If you're planning a road trip with Google Maps, perhaps you want each layer to be a different day of the trip, so you might name your first layer, Day 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next, you'll add all of your desired destinations by searching for them in the search bar and clicking on the pin to add them to your map. Organize your destinations by creating layers, renaming them, and dragging and dropping pins into their respective layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Note: if at all possible, do this on a desktop computer. As much as we love our phones, planning a large trip like this typically works better on a desktop (in my opinion, based on my experience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. Add Locations to Your Google Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nTo add locations to your Google map, click on the \u201c+\u201d button at the top left corner of your map and type in the address or name of the destination. 1. Create a New Google Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe first step is to open Google Maps, click on the \"hamburger menu\" (three lines in the top corner), then click on the \u201cMy Places\u201d tab. Your custom maps will be shown here, to create a new map, select \u201cCreate Map.\u201d Another shortcut is to simply go to mymaps.google.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nName your map something easy that describes your trip. Google Maps does make these maps able to be shared with the public, or with friends. So keep that in mind when you're naming your map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You'll also see you start with one layer, called Untitled Layer. You can adjust that name. If you're planning a road trip with Google Maps, perhaps you want each layer to be a different day of the trip, so you might name your first layer, Day 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next, you'll add all of your desired destinations by searching for them in the search bar and clicking on the pin to add them to your map. Organize your destinations by creating layers, renaming them, and dragging and dropping pins into their respective layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Note: if at all possible, do this on a desktop computer. As much as we love our phones, planning a large trip like this typically works better on a desktop (in my opinion, based on my experience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting down\u00a0with a physical map and planning out your cross-country road trip can be time-consuming and difficult. I'm sure baby boomers and Gen X'ers will remember the days of AAA TripTiks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fortunately, it's easy to plan a road trip with Google Maps or to use it to help you plan an itinerary for a city trip you're planning. You just need to create your own Custom Google Map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. Create a New Google Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe first step is to open Google Maps, click on the \"hamburger menu\" (three lines in the top corner), then click on the \u201cMy Places\u201d tab. Your custom maps will be shown here, to create a new map, select \u201cCreate Map.\u201d Another shortcut is to simply go to mymaps.google.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nName your map something easy that describes your trip. Google Maps does make these maps able to be shared with the public, or with friends. So keep that in mind when you're naming your map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You'll also see you start with one layer, called Untitled Layer. You can adjust that name. If you're planning a road trip with Google Maps, perhaps you want each layer to be a different day of the trip, so you might name your first layer, Day 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next, you'll add all of your desired destinations by searching for them in the search bar and clicking on the pin to add them to your map. Organize your destinations by creating layers, renaming them, and dragging and dropping pins into their respective layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Note: if at all possible, do this on a desktop computer. As much as we love our phones, planning a large trip like this typically works better on a desktop (in my opinion, based on my experience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting down\u00a0with a physical map and planning out your cross-country road trip can be time-consuming and difficult. I'm sure baby boomers and Gen X'ers will remember the days of AAA TripTiks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fortunately, it's easy to plan a road trip with Google Maps or to use it to help you plan an itinerary for a city trip you're planning. You just need to create your own Custom Google Map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first step is to open Google Maps, click on the \"hamburger menu\" (three lines in the top corner), then click on the \u201cMy Places\u201d tab. Your custom maps will be shown here, to create a new map, select \u201cCreate Map.\u201d Another shortcut is to simply go to mymaps.google.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Name your map something easy that describes your trip. Google Maps does make these maps able to be shared with the public, or with friends. So keep that in mind when you're naming your map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You'll also see you start with one layer, called Untitled Layer. You can adjust that name.
