A Tasty Weekend Escape from Dallas to Grapevine Texas

Dallas, Texas is quite well known throughout the US, and perhaps even the world. Home of tv shows and what some may call “America’s football team”, Dallas is certainly in the limelight. But just minutes outside of Dallas is the small town of Grapevine, Texas. Grapevine is the perfect spot to escape the Dallas spotlight and plan a tasty getaway from the big city.

I attended a conference in Grapevine and received complimentary tastings, all thoughts and opinions are mine.

Wine Tasting in Grapevine Texas

A fitting activity for a town named Grapevine, wine tasting is a must do for your Grapevine getaway.

Messina Hof

To get a taste of Texas wine history along with a taste of wine, plan a stop into Messina Hof. The first piece of history is the building itself. The Messina Hof tasting room is housed in a replica of the old Wallis Hotel. The hotel had been torn down in the 1930s, but this replica is very well done and gives you a fun spot to sip wine and wander. There are rooms downstairs where you can sit and chat, or head upstairs to get a peek at some old artifacts from the Wallis Hotel.

Messina Hof is also considered one of the founding wineries of the Texas wine trade. Paul & Merrill Bonarrigo planted their first vineyard in 1977 and named it Messina Hof, after their family origins of Messina, Sicily and Hof, Germany. This made them the 4th winery in the state, and true pioneers of Texas wine. Messina Hof takes great pride in the fact that their wines are made with 100% Texas fruit. And, if you’re visiting during a hot day, their wine slushies are evidently a must have!

Wine Train

Imagine sipping some wine while you ride on a line. On a few specific dates of the year, Grapevine offers a wine train experience with either jazz music, or holiday music. While the view from the train isn’t much, at night it’s all about the music and wine. A great activity to enjoy one evening on your Grapevine getaway.

Grapevine is home to quite a few wonderful winery tasting rooms, so planning a wine tasting tour is a must. Pick your favorites and sip and savor!

A family-owned Texas BBQ joint that has great food and a fun atmosphere. It reminded me of some of my favorite BBQ joints in Kansas, small, tasty, and rolls of paper towels on the table, because BBQ should be messy!
