Family Camping Trip at Wenberg County Park Washington

We recently borrowed my in-laws’ camping trailer for a weekend away at Wenberg County Park. We used to do the full tent camping experience, but I’ve found that I’m not really into that any longer. My in-laws’ camper is very nice and I couldn’t wait for our fun weekend away.

Our crazy summer schedule made it so we actually didn’t have a free weekend during the time my in-laws left the camper with us, so we had to juggle a family Run & Dye 5K and church with our camping weekend. Here’s a bit about how we spent our family camping weekend:

Wenberg County Park Campground Trailer Premium Hook up spot WE-27Our Spot:

We rented a hook-up campsite (WE-27) at Wenberg County Park in Stanwood, Washingon. It fit the 26 ft camper, and had a 30 amp electric hook up as well as a water hook up. Some other spots do offer sewer as well, but we didn’t pay for that. There is a dump station at the entrance/exit of the park. I believe we paid around $26 each night plus added booking fees.

Our Menu:

I created this camping menu meal planning printable to help us figure out what we wanted to eat each day and what I needed to buy at the store. We used our Coleman RoadTrip LXX Portable Grill to cook our dinner meals and the kitchen inside the camper for our sides and other meals. It works so well and is perfect for camping trips!

  • Friday Dinner: hamburgers (premade patties purchased at grocery), cucumber & tomato salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, baked beans
  • Saturday Breakfast (Run or Dye 5K): oatmeal or toast, fruit
  • Saturday Lunch: subway fast food after Run & Dye 5K
  • Saturday Dinner: steak kabobs (premade from grocery), corn on the cob, garden salad
  • Sunday Breakfast (church): muffins, fruit
  • Sunday Lunch: croissant lunchmeat sandwiches, vegetables
  • Sunday Dinner: hotdogs, cucumber & tomato salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, chips
  • Monday Breakfast: pancakes with huckleberries, fruit

Our Activities:

  • Swimming at the beach on Lake Goodwin at Wenberg County Park (Wenberg State Park)
    – The beach area has a nice swimming roped section as well as a large shore space with picnic tables. I loved how the large evergreen trees were left to grow near the shore of the lake so you had great shade and sun options as well as feeling like you’re truly in the northwest. It is a bit of a climb up from the beach to the campground, so bring your muscles!
  • Biking around the park
    – Not a lot of space to explore, but it was a great little adventure for our family. We even picked some huckleberries for our pancakes while we were out.
  • Redbox movies
    – Don’t think bad of us but we chose to rent a redbox movie for each evening and watch it in the camper. The girls loved it and it was a fun way to spend the evenings. You could always pack some playing cards or board games if you want to avoid screens.
  • Campfires & S’mores
    – A classic campfire tradition, and one our girls love. We even popped popcorn over the campfire for our movie nights. The girls loved whittling their own sticks for cooking their marshmallows (with adult supervision!). Check out my campfire conversation starters printable if you’d like some fun family talk prompts for your next trip. You could also use fix my campfire banana splits recipe if you’re looking for something other than s’mores.

It was a fabulous family getaway! Hopefully, we’ll get the chance to borrow the camper again some time. It’s so nice having a bathroom and kitchen! If you don’t have a camper, check out these car camping tips. And if you’re new to family camping, check out these tips for camping with kids.
