DIY Tabletop Basketball Game – Fun Basketball Party Ideas

March is here! Are you ready for spring AND some basketball? I know I’ll be cheering on my favorite team from Kansas! If you’re planning to watch some basketball games with your family or friends, I’m going to show you how to make this great DIY Tabletop Basketball Game for shooting some hoops while watching the games. Plus, I’ll show you how to create some fun basketball cookies to serve for snacking.

Make this fun DIY Basketball Game for your tabletop!

Supplies you’ll need:

  • 7/8″ wood dowel (found in hobby wood dept at Home Depot)
  • PVC conduit support strap / bracket (found in electrical section at Home Depot)
  • 2″ C clamp
  • Black spray paint
  • White foamboard
  • Red marker
  • White plastic canvas / mesh sheet (from hobby store like Michaels)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Duct tape
  • Cheez-It Crunch’d for “basketballs”
Hardware supplies to make tabletop basketball hoop

Supplies: wood dowel, pvc conduit strap / bracket, c clamp

Saw 10" piece from wood dowel

Saw off a 10″ piece of wood dowel and lightly sand.

Spray paint 10" wood dowel and bracket housing with black spray paint

Spray paint dowel and bracket.

Enclose end of wood dowel in bracket

Affix the bottom of the dowel into the bracket and close (use some duct tape to keep the bracket clamped onto the wood dowel.

Cut 3" x 5" piece of foam board and draw red edging

Cut a 3″ x 5″ piece of foamboard and draw red edging and shoot box.

Cut piece of plastic mesh 8" to hot glue to backboard

Cut a 8″ x 2″ piece of white mesh for the net.

Use hot glue to create circle hoop about 2" in diameter

Hot glue together the mesh to create about a 2″ diameter basket (I overlapped 10 squares).

Affix mesh hoop to backboard

Center and hot glue the net to the foamboard at the bottom of the shooting square.

Tape backboard onto wood dowel and mount to table with 2" C clamp

Affix the bracket and dowel to the table with the C clamp then tape the foamboard onto the wood dowel.

Gather your snacks and use the Cheez-It Crunch’d (with 100% real cheese!), as your basketballs for your tabletop basketball game.

Basketball Cookies

I made royal icing using this recipe which used egg whites, vanilla extract, and confectioner’s sugar. Then added some Wilton orange gel food color. Used an icing bag to flood the cookies and the premade black bag icing for the stripes.

I love the game! My son always gets told about throwing things in the house, but this would give him an outlet for his skillz! haha... Definitely looks like a fun way to involve the kids on game day, since watching the real game gets a little long and boring for them.

Great Wendy! You can also make it more difficult by setting the distance from your shooting "line" to the hoop. Just be sure you're ready for handling the misses that land on the floor!
