Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling

Bolster Your Immunity

While there is not scientific proof that vitamins can help you stay healthy, our family likes to start taking daily vitamins and supplements about a week before traveling. Our plan involves taking a daily vitamin, enjoying a daily vitamin c boost drink, and a daily probiotic dose. Once traveling we continue the daily vitamins and probiotic.

Drink Water

Staying hydrated is very important while traveling. Not only does it help keep your body functions running smoothly, it also helps guarantee you don’t get dehydrated in a new location. I had a recent experience of getting really sick because I didn’t follow my rule and my body wasn’t used to the climate. Packing a reusable water bottle is always a good idea.

Rest Well

Before you travel and during be sure you’re getting lots of rest. Sleeping helps your body repair and recharge so give it lots of opportunity to work. There’s a reason medical personnel always tell sick ones to “get rest”.

Stay Active

Before you head out for vacation get active and moving. Exercise can do some great things for your body, however be sure you don’t push it too hard because too much can actually weaken your immune system. Also be sure you’re staying active during your vacation too. Many hotels have nice fitness centers and pools, or you could just take a walking tour around the city sights.

Eat Healthy

Don’t skimp on the fruits and vegetables. Try to avoid too much of the processed and deep fried foods so many of us find while traveling. Finding a lodging room that has a kitchenette is a great way to stock healthy food so you’re not stuck eating fast food or restaurant food each day. It’s always a good idea to be mindful of whether there are any possible food dangers at the local you’re traveling to so you can avoid those.

De-Stress

Stress does a terrible thing to your body and immune system. Try as much as possible to leave your worries behind while traveling. Spend some extra time prepping to be gone from your job or school, and plan extra time for travel so you’re not stressing about departure times, parking, or other travel logistics.

Wash Up

Be sure you’re frequently washing your hands and using sanitizer when washing it’s possible to decrease your exposure to foreign germs. While traveling you should be especially mindful of not eating until you’ve washed or sanitized.

Don’t Touch Your Face

Many common germs travel from our hands into our eyes, noses, or mouth to get into our systems. Avoiding touching your face is a great way to keep the germs from gaining access.

Fly Smart

If you’re flying I have a few tips. Wipe down your seat area and commonly touched areas with a antibacterial wipe, bring on your own travel blanket and pillow (don’t use the ones provided by the airline), lubricate your nose with nasal gel or mist (dry membranes can’t block germs as effectively), and lastly drop the toilet seat before flushing and use your paper towel to turn off the water and open the door.

Stay Away

The last recommendation is to try your best to avoid sitting or standing next to someone who is visibly sick. Either find a new seat or ask for help from an attendant if you are in an assigned seat situation.

Be sure you’ve packed a travel first aid kit to help if you do happen to become sick while traveling. And don’t hesitate to reach out to your hotel if you are sick as they can often direct you to local pharmacies and physicians, as well as sometimes offering a wellness goody like chicken noodle soup.
